Five years after the Games of the XXXII Olympiad, the legacy of Tokyo 2020 can be seen across the Japanese capital – in venues in daily use, in the former Olympic Village now home to a growing residential community, and in the major sporting events the city continues to host. The anniversary is being marked this week with illuminations across Tokyo and comes as the city prepares to welcome the opening stop of the Olympic Q-Series on the road to LA28.

Situated in the Ariake district, on Tokyo Bay, are four venues: Ariake Arena, Ariake Gymnastics Centre, Ariake Urban Sports Park and Ariake Tennis Park.

Now known as Japan National Stadium, the Tokyo Olympic Stadium is used for athletics, football and rugby, among other sports. It has played host to a number of Japan national football team friendlies, including games against Brazil and Uruguay, a FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifying match against the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, and J League matches.

Of the 43 venues used for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, all 33 permanent sites remain in use — including 32 competition venues and the Olympic Village, which was purpose-built for the Games.

As of December 2022, around 10,000 of the volunteers who had lent their services at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games had registered for the Tokyo Volunteer Legacy Network, which provides a framework for supporting future volunteer efforts in the Japanese capital.

One aim in staging the Games of the XXXII Olympiad was to turn Tokyo into one big “sports field” and create a barrier-free environment across its parks and streets so that people of all ages and abilities could access sport.
