Tokyo 2020: Olympic Stadium
Now known as Japan National Stadium, the Tokyo Olympic Stadium is used for athletics, football and rugby, among other sports. It has played host to a number of Japan national football team friendlies, including games against Brazil and Uruguay, a FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifying match against the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, and J League matches.
Though the initial plan was for the stadium’s athletics track to be removed, it has been retained and staged events at the 2025 World Athletics Championships. The stadium is also central to Tokyo's other major sporting events. It is a cultural and concert venue too, with several major Japanese acts having performed there since the Games.
The 68,000-seater stadium, which includes 500 wheelchair seats, was built on the site of the previous National Stadium, used at Tokyo’s first Olympic Games in 1964 and demolished in 2015. Designed by the celebrated architect Kuma Kengo, its replacement is a blueprint for sustainable architecture, exemplified by its unique wooden lattice roof and greenery incorporated into the design. The stadium’s exterior is comprised of multi-layered eaves of wood from each of Japan’s 47 prefectures. More than 47,000 trees were planted in the area around the stadium.
