What does “Stars Align” mean?

The idea behind “Stars Align” is that something extraordinary can happen when dedication meets opportunity. For LA28, that means athletes and coaches bringing years of work to the Games, supported by volunteers, partners, businesses and communities across California and beyond, united in welcoming the world to the US.

The slogan also draws on Los Angeles’ global association with entertainment and creativity, while looking ahead to a historic chapter in the city’s sporting history.

In 2028, Los Angeles will become the third city to host the Olympic Games three times, following its previous editions in 1932 and 1984. It will also stage the Paralympic Games for the first time since they began in 1960.

These elements come together in the central campaign line: “In 2028, when the triumph of sport meets the city of dreams, Stars Align.”

What is a Games slogan?

Alongside the Olympic motto, “Faster, Higher, Stronger – Together,” and the Paralympic motto, “Change Starts with Sport”, each Organising Committee develops a slogan that reflects the character of its host city, region and country, as well as the spirit of that edition.

Previous examples include “A New World” for Rio 2016, “United by Emotion” for Tokyo 2020 and “Games Wide Open” for Paris 2024.

“Stars Align” continues that tradition, giving the 2028 Games a message rooted in the character and spirit of Los Angeles.

How was “Stars Align” launched?

The slogan made its debut through a 60-second campaign video set to “Can’t Stop” by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, a band with deep roots in Los Angeles.

The film pairs views of the city and LA28 venues with memorable Olympic and Paralympic highlights from across Games history, linking the identity of the host with sporting achievements from previous editions.

LA28 Chief Marketing Officer Alex Merchán said: “We wanted ‘Stars Align’ to feel like Los Angeles: bold, optimistic and a little cinematic. This film is just the beginning. Over the next two years, the slogan will come to life through the athletes, communities and stories that make these Games what they are.”

When are the Games taking place?

The LA28 Olympic Games will be held from 14 to 30 July 2028, followed by the Paralympic Games from 15 to 27 August 2028.
