Brisbane 2032 sports programme to be finalised at 147th IOC Session in April 2027
The programme for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games will be confirmed at the International Olympic Committee (IOC) 147th Session, which will be held in April next year in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. This revised timeline was approved by the IOC Executive Board (EB) at a meeting in Dakar ahead of the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games. That decision will set the stage for the Brisbane 2032 Games as the first edition to implement the IOC’s new sports programme methodology.
By pioneering this new model, the Brisbane 2032 Games will play a defining role in the evolution of the Olympic programme. Its implementation will help shape how disciplines are considered for future editions, serving as a blueprint for the Olympic Games that follow.
Introduced under the IOC’s Fit for the Future reforms, the new methodology is designed to give the Olympic Games greater flexibility, while ensuring the programme remains relevant, sustainable and responsive to factors including athlete representation, global appeal, cost and operational complexity.
The new methodology is based on a number of objective criteria, which have been developed in closed collaboration with the International Sports Federations. Following the consultation to date, the IOC confirms that the process will lead to a decision at the 147th IOC Session in April 2027 in Punta Cana.
As an important step in the process, the IOC EB intends to confirm the following in December 2026:
- the incumbent disciplines to be automatically recommended to the IOC Session for inclusion in the Brisbane 2032 Olympic programme, which will be the majority of disciplines;
- the incumbent and candidate disciplines to proceed to the combined comparison phase; and
- the candidate disciplines that will not proceed further in the process.
Working in close partnership with the Brisbane 2032 Organising Committee, the IOC will apply the new methodology with flexibility, in the context of the Organising Committee’s existing and advanced operational and delivery planning and preparations.
