IOC YOUNG LEADER BIO:
An IOC Young Leader from 2021 to 2024, Olushinaola (Shinaola) Ewuola is a water systems engineer with a strong passion for sport. He develops sustainable water systems for sporting facilities across Africa, ensuring activities can take place smoothly and under optimal conditions. Through his expertise, he has brought innovation to the intersection of water management, sustainability and sport.
PROJECT: Rain4Sports
During his time as a Young Leader, Shinaola launched Rain4Sports to address water supply challenges at sports facilities and to empower athletes and organisations to contribute to environmental sustainability. The project introduced rainwater harvesting systems in schools and sports venues, providing low-cost, sustainable access to water – a critical resource for participation, health and hygiene.
By reducing reliance on expensive groundwater, Rain4Sports enabled more children, particularly girls, to participate in sport safely and consistently. Complementing its infrastructure impact, the initiative also promoted citizen science, connecting athletes and academics to generate valuable climate data. By 2024, Rain4Sports had reached over 4,000 athletes through environmental education, partnered with eight citizen science projects, and contributed more than 40,000 environmental observations to global research.
