IOC Young Leader Bio:
Layana de Souza was born and raised in Rocinha, Brazil’s largest favela, and became the first person in her family to earn a university degree after receiving a full basketball scholarship to study in the United States. A former student-athlete, she holds a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in Sport Administration/Management and worked as Sport Information Coordinator for basketball at the Rio 2016 Organising Committee.
Having experienced first-hand the opportunities sport can create, Layana is determined to pay it forward. As an IOC Young Leader, she has scaled her impact as a panellist at the United Nations on crime prevention and sustainable development through sport, as a member of the IOC’s Olympism365 Commission, and as part of the Basketball For Good advisory committee at the FIBA Foundation.
Project: Mudando o Placar / Changing the Score
Founded on the belief that sport has the power to change the world, Mudando o Placar (Changing the Score) uses basketball as a platform to improve the quality of life of children and youth in Rocinha and other vulnerable Brazilian communities.
The initiative provides free basketball lessons, sports psychology support, and tutoring for youngsters aged 6-17, creating a safe and inclusive space where each year more than 100 boys and girls can build skills, strengthen character and access new opportunities. By combining sport with education and psychosocial support, Changing the Score reduces inequalities, fosters inclusion and equips young people to challenge stereotypes and overcome barriers.
