The Yanqing Zone
Situated 75 kilometres northwest of Beijing and served by China’s high-speed rail network, the mountainous district of Yanqing is known for its ski resorts, hot springs, national parks and landmarks including the Badaling section of the Great Wall of China.
It is home to two Beijing 2022 competition venues: the Yanqing National Alpine Ski Centre and the Yanqing National Sliding Centre, both of which are central to the district’s post-Games positioning as a tourism hub offering year-round attractions including winter sports, fitness and outdoor activities and cultural events.
Visitors to the Yanqing Zone, which opened its doors to the public on 1 May 2022, can tour the two Olympic venues, take a cable car to the start area of the National Alpine Skiing Centre, enjoy sliding sports simulators at the National Sliding Centre – the design of which resembles a Chinese dragon – and stay at the Olympic Village.
After the Games, the National Sliding Centre and the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (IBSF) signed a memorandum of understanding providing for the regular staging of IBSF events and training camps at the centre. Nicknamed the Flying Snow Dragon on account of its curving design, it welcomed the world’s leading skeleton athletes for the third round of the 2024-25 IBSF Skeleton World Cup in November 2024.
Likewise, the National Alpine Skiing Centre, which has a capacity of around 8,500, has also been bidding for major events, and staged a round of the FIS Snowboard Alpine World Cup in December 2024, featuring parallel giant slalom and slalom races.
