The Team Brazil Training Centre: A high-performance facility for athletes
Brazilian and international athletes now have access to the Team Brazil Training Centre, a high-performance venue with state-of-the-art equipment which opened at the Olympic Park in 2010.
The training centre, based at the Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre, which hosted Olympic artistic swimming, diving and water polo events, boasts several facilities, including a combat room, a strength and conditioning room, a relaxation room, a restaurant, a gymnasium and the Olympic Laboratory.
The venue forms part of a network of facilities throughout Brazil, including the Pan American Judo Centre in Bahia and the Olympic Development Centre in Fortaleza, which prepares Brazil’s Olympic athletes. About 200 athletes from up to 12 Olympic disciplines train each month at the facility, which also serves as a classroom for the Brazilian Coaches Academy.
The international athletes who have made use of the training centre have been either individuals with Brazilian coaches or members of national teams participating in organised training camps. Great Britain’s diving team held camps at the training centre in early 2019.
The Team Brazil Training Centre is also the home of the Olympic Laboratory, a state-of-the-art sports science facility. Since 2017, coaches have used the laboratory to design effective training programmes to reduce injury and improve the performance of top-level athletes in Brazil. In 2018, more than 2,000 performance tests were undertaken for over 300 athletes in 16 sporting disciplines.
The laboratory, funded by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, is a collaborative project between the Brazilian Olympic Committee and nine Brazilian teaching and research institutions.
