The countdown is on: LA28 marks two years to go with launch of volunteer programme
Recruitment for the “LA28 Volunteer Crew” begins today, two years ahead of the Opening Ceremony of the LA28 Olympic Games. The Organising Committee marked the occasion by opening applications for its Games-time Volunteer Programme, inviting people to become part of an unforgettable Olympic and Paralympic experience.
Key facts
- LA28 has opened applications for up to 60,000 Games-time volunteer roles.
- Olympic legend Carl Lewis has been named an Official Ambassador of the LA28 Volunteer Programme.
- Community volunteer events across the Los Angeles region and Oklahoma City are marking the two-year milestone.
The launch of the Hollywood-inspired “LA28 Volunteer Crew” programme represents one of the first major opportunities for people to play a direct role in delivering the next edition of the Olympic Games. With the central idea being that the volunteers will be the behind-the-scenes “crew” to the actors on stage, i.e. the athletes, Games-time volunteers will support a broad range of functions, from sport operations and communications to technology, ceremonies, transport, medical services and guest experience. While most opportunities will be based in Los Angeles, volunteers will also support the Olympic events in Oklahoma City and football matches across several cities in the United States (US).
“The Olympic Games have always been about people coming together in service of something greater than themselves. Athletes are at the heart of the Games, but it is the dedication of tens of thousands of volunteers that creates the atmosphere, warmth and sense of belonging that make every edition so special,” said Nicole Hoevertsz, IOC member and Chair of the IOC Coordination Commission for the LA28 Olympic Games. “As we celebrate two years to go until LA28, we invite people to become part of this journey and help deliver Games that will inspire new generations through friendship, excellence and respect.”
Community volunteering
Beyond Games-time operations, the LA28 volunteer programme reflects the belief that hosting the Games can create benefits long before the Opening Ceremony. Community volunteering initiatives taking place in LA and Oklahoma City (which will host softball and canoe slalom) to mark the milestone demonstrate how LA28 is already engaging local populations and creating opportunities for people to contribute to a lasting social and environmental legacy. The LA28 Volunteer Programme launched in 2025 with community volunteer opportunities, offering more than 25 events across the Los Angeles region, including beach and trail clean-ups, habitat restoration and food-packing initiatives, giving Angelenos a taste of volunteering with LA28.
"I know what it means to compete on the world's biggest stage, and I know first-hand that the magic of the Olympic Games is not just made by the athletes — it is made by the people who show up to support them," said Carl Lewis, an Official Ambassador of the LA28 Volunteer Programme. "Los Angeles has always shown up for me, and now it's our turn to show up for the world. If you want to be part of something historic, apply today. The role of a lifetime is waiting."
LA28 CEO Reynold Hoover added: “In 2028, the world’s attention will be on LA as the world’s best athletes make history, but it's the crew behind the scenes that help make those moments possible. Their impact cannot be overstated — behind every event, every venue and every moment will be the LA28 Volunteer Crew, ready and eager to play a vital role in the delivery of the LA28 Games.”
