“Teranga”: the sound of Dakar 2026 celebrates Senegalese hospitality and the power of sport

The official song of the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games (YOG) has been unveiled, bringing together Senegalese culture, musical talent and the values of the Olympic Movement ahead of the first Olympic sporting event on African soil.

Composed and performed by Senegalese artist Mamy Mbaye, “Teranga” will serve as the soundtrack of Dakar 2026, capturing the energy, optimism and spirit of the Youth Olympic Games. The song was given its debut on 23 July during the Dakar 2026 100 Days to Go celebrations, where it was performed live for the first time.

Selected through a nationwide competition organised by the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee (YOGOC), which attracted around 100 submissions from across Senegal, the song was chosen by a jury of renowned Senegalese music figures for its ability to reflect the identity of Senegal, celebrate African creativity and embody the Olympic values of excellence, friendship and respect.

More than an anthem, “Teranga” is a call for unity, presenting sport as a space for sharing and connection beyond competition. The song highlights the importance of fair play, respect between athletes and supporters, and the celebration of both victories and defeats.

A celebration of Senegalese identity

The title itself pays tribute to one of Senegal's defining values: teranga, meaning hospitality. It reflects the welcome that Senegal will extend to athletes, teams and visitors from around the world when Dakar 2026 begins on 31 October.

One of the song's defining lines, “Pincez tous vos koras, welcome au pays de la teranga”, captures this spirit of openness and celebration. The kora, a traditional West African string instrument, is deeply rooted in the region's cultural heritage and forms an important part of Senegalese identity.

Inspired by the excitement of stadiums, the voices of supporters and the shared emotions created through sport, “Teranga” invites people to come together and celebrate the Youth Olympic Games through music.

Speaking about the official song, Dakar 2026 YOGOC General Coordinator Ibrahima Wade said:

It is a testament to the artistic vitality of our country and the involvement of young people in this historic venture, the first of its kind on African soil. It is not just a song; it is the musical identity of the Dakar 2026 YOG. It will capture the emotions of the stadiums, the ceremonies, the Flame Tour, the bustling streets. It will be a sound that unites, inspires and elevates.
