Stockholm Olympic Stadium
Stockholm Olympic Stadium remains in regular use and has been refurbished on several occasions.
It now stages sporting events such as the Diamond League and the Stockholm Marathon, as well as major concerts. The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen and AC/DC are just some of the acts to have performed at the venue. It was the focal point for the city’s Olympic Jubilee celebrations in 2012, and is also used for cross-country skiing in the winter months, when three 430-metre tracks are laid out.
The stadium was a stand-in venue at the Olympic Games Melbourne 1956, staging some of the equestrian events, which had to be held outside Australia due to the country’s strict quarantine laws for horses.
Listed as a national heritage site, this red-brick venue, which was originally intended to be a temporary wooden structure, was built in the neoclassical style. It has also witnessed more athletics world records than any other stadium in the world, a total of 83 between 1912 and 2008. The Swedish Olympic Committee was founded in one of the towers in the Olympic Stadium in the year following the 1912 Olympic Games, and the tower remains the home of the committee to this day.
