Olympic Velodrome
Located at the California State University (CSU), the Olympic Velodrome was constructed for the Los Angeles 1984 Olympic Games edition as part of a sponsorship agreement between the Los Angeles Olympic Organising Committee and the Southland Corporation, at a cost of USD 3 million. Official Olympic Games Los Angeles 1984 sponsor 7-Eleven took on the naming rights of the venue. After the Games, the venue was donated to the University.
At the time, the Olympic Velodrome was the only world class cycling track in the western United States, and the only one in the world on a university campus. Post-Olympic Games, the velodrome was used by the California State University for developmental classes and training, maintenance exercise and cycling. It was also available for public use and races, both professional and amateur, as well as concerts, graduation ceremonies and circuses.
However, in 2000, a worldwide sports and entertainment company announced plans to build a stadium to house the Los Angeles Galaxy Football Club. The stadium plans called for the demolition of the Olympic Velodrome in 2002. Two years later, a new indoor velodrome, the VELO Sports Center, opened at the same CSU complex. The home of USA Cycling’s national track cycling programme, it stages training and international competitions, as well as classes open to riders of all levels. The VELO Sports Center will be the venue for the track cycling events at the Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028.
