Only the Olympic Jumping Complex was an existing site, with the rest built specially for the Games. Today, all but two of them are also used for high-performance sport. The two exceptions are the Mount Whitney Cross-Country Skiing Route and the Clifford Fall Cross-Country Skiing Route, which are now used for recreational cycling, hiking and cross-country skiing.

Four of the venues were used again when Lake Placid hosted the Olympic Winter Games for a second time, in 1980. Staging the Winter Games for the second time was a turning point for the village, which became a prime sporting location for elite and recreational athletes and a popular destination for tourists.

The James C. Sheffield Speed Skating Oval, also a competition venue still in use, served as the Olympic Stadium.

Lake Placid’s Olympic infrastructure has been upgraded over the years, and additional venues such as the US Olympic and Paralympic Training Center and the Olympic Museum have been built. All the venues were upgraded thanks to an investment of nearly USD 240 million by the New York State government. The investment was a recognition of the contribution they make to the local economy year-round and furthered Lake Placid’s preparations to host the 2023 Winter World University Games.

There was no official Olympic Village at the Games.
