In 1947, two years after the end of the war and in the midst of a national reconstruction programme, Helsinki City Council officially informed the International Olympic Committee of its willingness to host the 1952 Olympic Games. Though there were doubts as to the Finnish capital’s ability to stage the event, it won the vote, boosting the country’s post-war resurgence and the reconstruction of its national identity.
