Gangneung coastal cluster
The venues in the Gangneung coastal cluster continue to serve sport, youth and the wider community. Revitalised for the Gangwon 2024 Winter Youth Olympic Games, the cluster’s infrastructure now supports a mix of international events and education initiatives and is in year-round public use, extending the venues’ impact well beyond the Games.
The 12,000-capacity Gangneung Ice Arena staged short track speed skating and figure skating at the Gangwon 2024 Winter Youth Olympic Games. It recently underwent renovation work and is now a multi-sport facility used by the public. Its lower rink has been converted into a swimming pool, while the main rink is used to stage concerts and other cultural events. The adjoining training facility is used as an exhibition and lecture facility by Youngdong College.
The Gangneung Curling Centre is open to the public all year round. Another Dream Programme venue, it staged the Korean National Curling Championships in 2019 and the curling events at Gangwon 2024. Built in 1998, the centre has a capacity of 3,500 and hosted the 2009 World Women’s Curling Championships.
The Gangneung Hockey Centre – the setting for ice hockey and the Closing Ceremony at Gangwon 2024 – was also the venue for the National Men’s Ice Hockey Championships in late 2018 and staged the four-team Legacy Cup in 2019. World Para Ice Hockey held an officiating camp at the centre in November 2024, training and evaluating future officials, referees and linespeople.
The second of PyeongChang 2018’s two ice hockey venues, Kwandong Hockey Centre, has since been transferred to Catholic Kwandong University and is now used by its students as a multi-sport and educational facility.
