The regeneration of the Phaleron Waterfront was one of the most important urban regeneration projects in Greece. It combined efficient waste management, revitalisation of destroyed habitats, stream control and the expansion of vegetation by tree planting. Water quality controls began near the Olympic venues of Phaleron and Schinias, and continued at almost all the beaches around Athens, with online published results.

The upgrading of the Phaleron bay waters led to the return of rare species and made the waters safe for citizens’ use.

In addition, approximately 350,000 plants, bushes and trees typical of Greek flora were donated by Athens 2004 to 26 municipalities of the Attica area.
