A formal framework for sports medicine
Dedicated to providing the best medical care for athletes, the Fédération Internationale de Médecine Sportive (FIMS) was founded as the Association Internationale Medico-Sportive (AIMS) at St Moritz in 1928.
FIMS works closely with international sports federations and the IOC, and with national and international organisations operating in sports medicine and related fields. Based in Lausanne, Switzerland, it is the umbrella organisation for four continental and 117 national sports medicine associations worldwide, bringing together 125,000 sports physicians from 117 countries.
Affiliated with the International Council of Sport Science and Physical Education (ICSSPE) and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), FIMS publishes scientific articles in a number of journals, including the International SportMed Journal.
Its predecessor – the Association Internationale Medico-Sportive (AIMS) – came into being at St Moritz 1928, following a meeting of a group of sports medics. Its creation reflected a growing interest in sports-related health issues and the promotion of the new field of “sports medicine”, a term coined when AIMS was set up.
